Jan has been an artist for as long as she can remember. She pursued her love of drawing and painting through college, where she received a degree in fine art from ETSU. After graduating she taught art in public schools in MA for a number of years. The opportunity arose to move to another state where she gave up teaching and became Director of the Krempp Gallery in the Community Arts Center in Jasper IN. There was much personal growth during the years she was fortunate to have this position. In 2000 Jan retired to southeastern, NC with her husband. She has found this area to be a dynamic and exciting place to live as an artist. In effect, it has been a rebirth for she and her work. Since moving here, Jan has discovered the medium of pastels. Although she has dabbled in a little bit of everything as an art major, nothing has excited her the way pastels do. She feels the pastel stick is an extension of her fingers. Because of her love of drawing, this has had an immediate appeal to her. The vibrant colors and expressive quality of the medium has introduced her to endless possibilities. Her goal is to always learn new things and grow as an artist. Jan currently directs the Thursday morning figure drawing class at Franklin Square Gallery. She is a member of Associated Artists of Southport, Artisans On Howe, Oak Island Art Guild, Brunswick Arts Council, Southeastern NC Pastel Painters, Appalachian Pastel Society and the NC Pastel Society.
